Wife Beater

For a moment, I realized
Momentary was the realization,
That I have hurt you, and
None of us are pleased.
Unlike the time,
When both of us were pleased, also exhausted.
Why would I do such a thing?
I claim to be sensible, rational, humane
The line runs out. (Not the adjectives)
With a mighty ego, nestled in the depths
Of my Mind, I’m an actor.
Not acting anymore. But,
Flipping roles.
I do not flinch,
Do not battle my eyelids,
No clues to Sherlocks who eagerly wait,
To tell me. Who I am.
Who am I?
I’m not a wife beater.
That discourse is always for the third person.
I’m … (the adjectives)
For a moment, I realized.
I did realize.
Horror! Horror!

  1. You've put the emotions in words really well.. nailed it! These thoughts apply to not just to fractured minds but their fractured families too. I remember a case at a previous work place when we were trying to ask one of the cooks to leave her husband as he would abuse her everyday. She would go back to him despite all our suggestions. May be these were her thoughts too.

  2. this abstract reflects the mental dilemma of those numerous human beings who do not understand their wives.
it also reflects the human psychology to taunt others mistake n neglect own flaws.here the writer ,despite of the fact of misunderstanding his wife still dosent consider himself as wife beater ut neglects it by specifying it to be momentary and finally even this realization thought brought horror in him..!!!

  3. Tanveer, the serenity of your diction just flows inside the emotional psyche and makes us all muse over what you have written. really it doesn't create the horror but creates a need to think for such an act....it touched my heart for various reasons. all the best. never stop writing. love u lot

  5. I would say that no poetry can justify/rationalize/claim to show the other side of wife-beating ... at the risk of sounding like an 'ugly', 'loser', 'jealous' feminist or essentialist ... To say that a wife-beater is also a nuanced personality with his own complex problems and dignify it in poetry is to be in the danger of belonging to the majoritarian discourse. You may have good intentions in trying to problematizing a shameful phenomenon but I am afraid it doesn't work for me. I am sorry :(

  6. Nice one Tanveer....But, questions are raised often on events, issues. and of course moral ....Again, answers come in various way. Some are in support and others against the perception. I always wonder, why human can't exist without any adjective and adverbs.
I must quote a line from a novel i read long before.
Humans are gifted with such a precarious attribute, by which they only deceive themselves.
We always see what we want to see.... we always argue what we want to prove.
NB- Exceptions stills exists and they are called morons by the rest.
